Douro, Portugal
Winemaker: Ana Rola
Environmental Practice: Sustainably Made, Vegan Friendly & Low Sulphite
Ana Rola our “woman in wine” is born & bred in the Douro & since an early age knew what she wanted to do. To be a winemaker in the Douro Valley where she was raised. Where she can find originality, unbeatable terroir knowledge & overcome the challenges in creating a wine that stands out from the crowd!
The estate, Quinta de Remostias, remains from the XVIII century & is located in Peso da Régua, the centre of Douro Valley. In 2014, Ana decided to leave her post as head wine maker at a large prestigious Douro winery to go it alone.
She explains, “after so many years doing what I love for others, I think it gets to a point that we think ‘why not do it for myself.’” Ana Rola shared, “To make wines that really tell you where they came from. Wine from specific vineyards with minimal intervention. Wines that are true & honest. We believe in what we do!’” & we do too!
That’s why we organized a tasting panel, in which we opened 45 Douro wine samples (with 35 guests from wine novices to wine shop owners). Among them all, Rola wines were all showing to be a distinct winner in labelling/design, quality, value, aroma/palate & return-ability. From our survey we brilliantly deduced that Rola wines needed to find their way to the UK & naturally, we finished every bottle that was left.

ROLA TOURIGA NACIONAL - 2020
AROLA5-R - Douro DOC - 100% Touriga Nacional (50 years plus old vines) - 15%
In the winemaking process, the vintage was early, which was attributed to the weather conditions leading up to it. However, this resulted in high-quality musts, boasting elevated sugar content, desirable levels of acidity, and phenolic compounds.
The winery fully ferments all their grapes in inox tanks for 7 to 10 days at temperatures ranging from 20° to 25° Celsius. Following this, they rack the resulting wines to undergo malolactic fermentation. Once the second fermentation is complete, 100% of the wine is carefully aged in barriques for a period of 15 months. Finally, the wine is bottled in October 2022, producing a total of around 750 bottles of 75cl.
Tasting Notes: Fabulous expression of a Douro TOURIGA NACIONAL. You will carefully idealize this Grand Reserva to be a wine with lots of tannins present and an incredible structure. Loved by those ones that appreciate bold red wines, this offers profound depth and dark flavours. The wine has a concentrated nose of violets, liquorice with yet fresh layers of mint and blueberries. Aged in 500L French oak barrels what gives it a round velvety texture and indulgent mouth feel.
Food Pairings: All the indulgent high protein delicatessen are match made in heaven. Rack of lamb, Mushroom Wellington (vegan or meat option), hard cheeses and roast beef.
Serving Temperature: 16 – 18°C
